Hellfire is 45 mins drive from Cape Town.
Driving there one emerges from the Hugenot tunnel into Du Toits Kloof (= gorge) to be surrounded by the majestic peaks of The Witteberg and, half hidden, Du Toits peak.
Both these mountains offer long traditional climbs.
Hellfire itself is a smaller band of red cliff on the lower reaches of the A ridge of Du Toits peak.
Drive 2 km past the hotel/resort and u-turn immediately after the Klip river bridge.
Drive back 400m to park on the verge after a large sign.
The path begins at the other end of the roadside barrier.
The walk up takes 45min on a moderate slope.
This cliff is north facing and the best time to visit is autumn or spring, although winter can be excellent when it is not raining. The rock dries very quickly after rain. In Summer the best bet is to get there as early as possible, the rock stays in the shade until 11.00am.
